Warner Music Nashville undergoing major renovation on Music Row

By Cole Villlena for Nashville Tennessean

John Esposito scribbled down two permanent messages on the walls of his office on Music Row when he moved in 12 years ago. The chairman and CEO of Warner Music Nashville had lofty goals for the country music label:

“RESERVED FOR OUR FIRST GOLD RECORD AS WARNER MUSIC NASHVILLE,” he wrote on one patch of wall. “THIS SPACE RESERVED FOR OUR FIRST PLATINUM,” read another.

Esposito will keep the “decorations” — and the framed copies of the Blake Shelton and Hunter Hayes records that eventually covered them — in his revamped office at Warner when it opens in the fourth quarter of 2021. A multimillion-dollar renovation to their headquarters kicked off in March, meaning Warner will remain on Music Row as other music companies decamp to office space in other neighborhoods.

“When I joined Warner Music 18 plus years ago, I wanted to get down to that building in Nashville because there were magic things happening in the building,” Esposito said, referencing label artists such as Faith Hill and Shelton. “That building just resonated with people.”

Warner’s building at 20 Music Square East opened in 1992 and has never received a major renovation. HASTINGS Architecture, which has designed spaces for WME talent agency and Sony Music Nashville, is overseeing the project.

“Over the years, they’ve done some little things here and there to help things come along, but this is the first time in 30 years that they’ll really be getting a major overhaul,” said HASTINGS interior designer Claudia Lofton. “We wanted to try and incorporate as many modern aspects that we could.”

Offices for Warner Chappell Music, the label’s publishing arm, will move across the street.
