Next Profile
Raised in Knoxville and a graduate of the University of Tennessee School of Architecture, David was destined to be an architect from an early age. He joined Jim and Jeannie Hastings in 1996. After a short stint away from the firm, David rejoined HASTINGS in 2000, becoming a partner in 2004.
David has been engaged in the most dramatic 20 years of architectural change and growth in Nashville’s modern history, contributing award-winning designs across the city and region. Building upon his passion for design, community, and environment, David brings all three to a creative intersection of concept-driven designs that shape the fabric and context of the city and region.
As a partner, his leadership and early commitment to creating architecture that responds to context and site with the integration of sustainable design strategies served as the catalyst for transforming the firm’s identity from a local architecture practice to a nationally regarded design firm with deep expertise in sustainability.
David contributes significant time, energy, and resources to the profession and local non-profits. He is currently a board member with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, and serving on the Mayor’s Sustainability Advisory Committee, as well as a past board member of the U.S. Green Building Council and the Green Hills YMCA. Additionally, David served as Founding Chair of AIA’s COTE Middle Tennessee Chapter, Chair of the AIA Tennessee’s Architecture PAC, was an AIA Tennessee Ex-officio Board Member, President of the University of Tennessee National Alumni Association’s Nashville Chapter, and was a Board of Governor’s appointee.
If ever not working, David can be found with his family on the lake in the summer, the mountains in the winter, or at Pearl Jam concerts around the country.
