Next Project
The 200,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to improving student wellbeing with diverse, inclusive programming on Montgomery Bell Academy’s historic campus. The H. Frank Burkholder Wellness & Event Center shapes the school’s enduring vision and mission to invest in mind, body, and spirit to support holistic wellbeing.
The project challenges the notion of traditional athletic facilities by interjecting a more cerebral discussion about holistic wellness. Designed to support mental and physical health and be a resource beyond MBA, the Wellness Center provides opportunities to gather, host, meet, study, perform, meditate, learn, play, practice, and compete. In addition, the project carries forward the campus’ architectural and formal language on the exterior while strategically cloaking the mass and scale of the interiors.
The Wellness Center features a 1,200-seat event center, three-court fieldhouse, double-height indoor practice field, yoga and meditation rooms, golf center, squash center, dedicated wrestling gym, fitness center, locker rooms, training facilities, offices for coaches and administrators, as well as screening, meeting, and instructional classrooms.
Minimizing operational costs for the large facility, the Wellness Center uses efficient building systems to save an estimated 20% of annual energy costs. Low-flow plumbing fixtures work to reduce potable water consumption by an estimated 35% annually. The Wellness Center is certified LEED Gold.
