Matt Spaulding is a Principal of HASTINGS bringing over twenty years of experience designing award-winning spaces. He is both an architectural and interior designer and is HASTINGS’ resident expert in hospitality. His ceaseless curiosity and passion for design fuels his approach which prioritizes user experience and community benefit.

Since joining HASTINGS, Matt has been the Project Director of several notable projects including Thompson Nashville, a 224-key boutique hotel in the heart of Nashville’s Gulch neighborhood, which was named to Condé Nast Traveler’s 2017 Hot List and was also declared 2017’s Most Beautiful Hotel in Tennessee by Architectural Digest, Virgin Hotels Nashville (260 keys), the first ground-up Virgin Hotel, and Hyatt Centric Nashville (252 keys), introducing a contemporary hospitality experience to the SoBro neighborhood. He has spent over a decade working alongside hoteliers to establish design standards and creative direction for brands under the Hyatt and Virgin hotel flags. In addition to his hotel experience, Matt brings a portfolio of retail experience including work with Nike, Theory, Lily Pulitzer, and Ralph Lauren.

His work has been recognized by Condé Nast Traveler, Sleeper, AHEAD (Awards for Hospitality Experience and Design), Elle Décor, Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Interior Design Magazine, American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Urban Land Institute (ULI).

A professional path that began in Nashville, moved to New York City, and back to Nashville again has fostered his adventurous, curious nature. Calling on his past life as a bartender, Matt’s work is always designed from a perspective of service, hospitality, and approachability. Today, Matt travels all over the world meticulously drawing every hotel room he stays in, developing an innate sense of best practices and providing an unending source of inspiration.
